Digital calling

VoIP and Digital Voice Services

Understand home and business internet calling, how it works and what to check before changing from a traditional phone line.

What VoIP means in everyday use

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In simple terms, your calls travel through an internet connection rather than the old copper telephone network. Many UK broadband providers now supply a digital phone service through the router, while business systems often work through desk phones, laptops and mobile apps.

Before you switch

Check whether your existing number can be transferred, whether emergency calling works during a power cut, which equipment is included and whether international or mobile calls cost extra. Alarm systems, lift phones, care lines and some payment terminals may need separate checking.

Compare the whole service

The lowest monthly price is not always the best fit. For home users, reliability and simple handsets may matter most. For a business, call queues, opening-hour routing and support response times can be more important than a small price difference.
