How a digital home phone is connected
With most modern packages, the phone plugs into the broadband router or a small adapter supplied by the provider. You can usually make and receive calls in much the same way as before, but the router and broadband connection need to be working.
Can you keep your number?
Often, yes. Number transfers are common, but they should be requested before the old service is cancelled. Confirm the transfer in writing if keeping the number is important, particularly when moving home or changing both broadband and phone provider.
What happens in a power cut?
A traditional corded landline could sometimes continue working without household power. A router-based phone normally cannot. People who rely on a landline for medical or safety reasons should ask the provider about battery backup or another suitable emergency arrangement.
